Wanderful Tips: Safari Essentials

Packing for a safari can be more difficult than any other trip. Especially if you are planning to fly between safari camps, luggage restrictions can pose great threats to ensuring you have all of your essentials within weight limits, and still are picture perfect ready for all the instagrammable moments in between!

Just like so many other types of trips, layering on safaris is essential so you can mix and match outfits throughout your journey - keeping looks fresh but you still prepared!

See below for some of our tips for packing for any safari!

  • Embrace neutral ‘bush’ colors - olive green, gray, khaki and brown.

    • Bright colors bring unwanted attention when navigating the bush, while dark clothes absorb heat and attract insects - so embrace neutrals!

    • Important note: DO NOT pack any camouflage clothes - these are reserved for military and anti-poacher personnel

  • Light weight long pants and shirts

    • The bush can be chilly at dawn and in the evenings, plus long sleeves and pants can help reduce sunburn and bug bites

    • Laundry service is included in most luxury properties - so make sure the clothes are lightweight so they can dry easily in the African sun

  • Basic, well draped t-shirts

    • Basic neutral tees will be staple building blocks for your safari outfits

  • Lightweight vest or fleece

  • Transitional scarf

    • Scarf in the morning, wrap at night - or just a pop of color to brighten up your neutral outfit - a scarf is the perfect multipurpose accessory for your safari

  • Hat with brim

  • Good quality polarized sunglasses

  • Sturdy closed toe sneakers

    • Comfortable walking shoes are best to easily get in and out of safari jeep, walking around your camp and keeping your feet protected from the elements (and bugs!)

  • Pool clothes

    • Don’t forget to pack for your R&R time back in the camps! Bathing suits and flip flops are great for lounging in between game drives

  • Beyond your personal normal toiletry necessities, make sure you don’t forget these essentials:

    • Sunscreen and lip balm

    • Insect repellent (though most camps do provide their own)

    • Anti-malaria medication

    • Glasses in case the dust from game drives inflames your contacts

  • Other accessories not to be forgotten!

    • Good camera with the equipment (lenses and memory cards) you need to capture all your memories

    • Binoculars

    • Flashlight

    • International converter/adapters

With these in your bag - you are set for your bucket-list safari adventure! And the best news? When booking with Wanderful Journeys we are here to help you with packing every step of the way!

Happy travels!
